Although Exchange is not requirement for installation of Lync but still we may miss few features that can be used by our end users when they have it.
Below are the features 

• Access conversation history and voice mail
• Play back voice mail message 
• Display free/busy information and working hours
• Display meeting subject, time, and location 
• Display Out of Office status and note
• Exchange contact sync
• Search Outlook personal contacts

When user logs on mulitiple device like desktop, laptop and mobile device using IM client then you will able to get the pop-up message at the latest acive available device and the endpoint you accept the conversation. This is as per design.

In OCS we have Single Point of Presence (SPOP), only a single device could be logged in at one time where as Lync Multiple Points of Presence (MPOP)
